In Office Labs Q&A

How can in-office labs enhance my care?

Lab testing has come a long way in recent years, and today’s testing offers an astounding depth of insight into how your body is currently functioning. Lab testing is used in several different ways.

Some of the reasons health professionals might order lab testing include:

  • Diagnosing disease
  • Tracking hormone production
  • Screening for nutritional deficiencies
  • Evaluating how well a medication or treatment is working
  • Screening for illicit drug use
  • As a condition of employment

Your practitioner is happy to explain why lab testing is necessary and how your results guide your treatment planning.

What should I do to prepare for in-office labs?

Before your lab testing, your provider explains what to expect and how to prepare for your labs. Some forms of testing require very little in the way of preparation. For others, fasting for some time before your visit is required. Avoid eating or drinking anything other than water for several hours before your labs.

Your provider may ask you to take other preparation steps, including:

  • Avoiding certain foods
  • Refraining from smoking
  • Avoiding sexual activity or strenuous exercise
  • Pausing certain medications

Adhering to the guidelines provided by your practitioner helps you make the most of your lab testing. You can resume your normal activities immediately after your lab testing visit.

What happens after the results of my in-office labs come in?

It doesn’t take long for your in-office lab testing results to come back. Depending on the reason for your testing, your provider reaches out to review the results, either during an in-office visit or over the phone.

If additional testing is needed, you receive the details at that time. If your labs track your health or treatment, the results are added to your medical record and used to chart changes over time.

If your labs reveal a need to alter your current treatment plan, your provider explains all available options. Adjusting medication is a common response to in-office lab testing and can ensure that your drug therapy is meeting your current set of needs.
